Depression Therapy

Are The Majority Of Your Days Spent Feeling Hopeless, Overwhelmed And Disconnected?

  • Do you ever wish you weren’t living or have had thoughts of how you would harm yourself?

  • Can it feel like a crushing weight just to get out of bed and shower?

If you’re noticing that you feel increasingly irritable, have difficulty making decisions, want to just be left alone or constantly feel on the verge of tears you may be dealing with Major Depression. Maybe you are one of those people that still holds down a job, always has a smile on your face, and your friends and family would have no clue how much you’re suffering inside. Perhaps your depression has gotten so severe that it feels like a huge accomplishment to just get out of bed in the morning and brush your teeth. The constant nagging of your depression may even lead you to consider harming yourself or have thoughts of ending your life through suicide.

Regardless of how severe your symptoms are, our counselors know the despair and frustration that comes along with clinical depression and our treatment is designed to help you understand, manage, and find relief from the most debilitating symptoms.

Do You Have Questions About Depression Therapy?

What Exactly Is Clinical Or Major Depression?

Unlike feelings of sadness, depression is typically seen as a low mood, or feeling empty or hopeless most of the day for weeks, months or even years. It is usually accompanied by changes in appetite or sleep, feelings of fatigue, guilt and loss of interest in things you once previously enjoyed. It is estimated that about 1 in 6 individuals will experience depression in their lifetime.

It can be rooted in biological factors such as brain chemistry (like imbalances in serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine), hormonal changes in pregnancy and postpartum or menopause, along with living life as a human such as stress, trauma or abuse, grief, low self-esteem and major life transitions.

Our counselors work with you one-on-one to address the root causes of your depression through evidenced based practices such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and other therapeutic treatment. We can help you challenge negative thought patterns, develop healthier coping strategies, and build resilience to manage day to day life.

Specialized Individual Depression Therapy For Your Needs

Life is hard and we are unlikely to escape it without any challenges. Our treatment for clinical depression first includes an assessment that understands your history, your most pressing symptoms and what you would currently like to be different. This may include a discussion around referrals for medication management, alternative treatments for depression, nutrition support or group counseling for depression. Psychotherapy will focus on the tools that you find the most useful, integrated with additional supports that may be necessary to help you get feeling better.

Therapy For Severe Depression

If you are struggling with harming yourself or having thoughts of suicide, our therapists will work with you to identify ways to stay safe, teach skills to manage the distressing thoughts and urges, and collaborate with you on a plan that helps keep you safe. Around 60-70% of people with depression report having thoughts of suicide at some point. We know that you likely don’t want to die, you just don’t want to keep feeling so awful! Our counselors are not afraid to talk to you about depression and suicidal thoughts. By talking about it together it can help you to feel less ashamed and better able to manage it. If you are engaging in self-harm, we identify the triggers and have proven DBT techniques to help you reduce or eliminate these behaviors. Our counseling focuses on how to be kind to yourself and body, even if the depression is telling you otherwise.

You Can Feel Better!

Imagine waking up without the impending sense of doom. Perhaps you don’t believe you will ever look forward to your day. You wonder if you’ll ever enjoy your hobbies, friends or work again. Clinical depression doesn’t have to keep controlling your life. Our skilled therapists use interventions that can help you think differently, manage emotions in more helpful ways, and find a deeper love and understanding for yourself.

You may need more coaching or skills in how to challenge negative thoughts, or perhaps you need more immediate help in how to not become overwhelmed with your feelings. Maybe you need help managing the world around you and focusing on what you can or can’t control. We draw from different theories such as DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavior Therapy) IFS (Internal Family Systems) ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), Trauma based approaches such as Accelerated Resolution Therapy and Mindfulness Practices.  Your life experiences and depression isn’t the same as someone else’s so your treatment is individualized to you. Our counselors have many years of experience between them, with varying backgrounds and expertise that we can match to your needs.

You May Still Be Wondering if Depression Therapy Really Can Help

  • As a parent, it can feel scary and even hopeless if your child is refusing to get help. No one wants to feel like a “problem” to be fixed, and sometimes a child or teen may need time to warm up to the idea of working with a therapist. Part of depression treatment may be initially working with you on how to support your child at home. Over time, we will discuss strategies to help encourage your child to start attending sessions too. We work hard to build rapport even with the trickiest teen or child, and maybe even win them over to liking therapy!

  • We are entering an era of mental health where we are seeing many different ways to intervene in depression when there are biological roots. Our counselors have seen the value of medical interventions with severe depression such as SSRI’s, TMS (Transcranial magnetic stimulation),and  ketamine-assisted therapy. You are in charge of your counseling and get to choose the kind of approach that feels most comfortable for you, while also encouraging the exploration of different treatments that may help to provide you with the most relief. One of our core principles is client autonomy and our therapists will honor your thoughts and beliefs around different interventions.

  • Your specific needs are unique to you and we cannot guarantee how long you will be in therapy. We do encourage those struggling with mild to severe depression to commit to weekly sessions, and the duration may be anywhere from several months to a year before you start feeling more like yourself. Taking the time to invest in YOU is worth it. You deserve to be free from the darkness depression has cast in your life. We will be with you every step of the way to start coming out of the shadows and walking into your life with hope, peace and a renewed sense of self-confidence.
